The responded critical analyse why is it important to unpack our prejudices and biases when working with clients in social work practice. Social work is a practice grounded in the core values of service, social justice, competence, the importance of human relationships, integrity, dignity and worth of every person (Code Of Ethics, 2016). To begin a capable social worker needs to understand the entire spectrum of social work activity to be effective in working with individuals, families, agencies, organisation, communities and large groups of people. As a profession social worker must understand privilege and oppression to promote the well-being of individuals when working with clients as it meets all the criteria of the profession. A social worker needs to give equal privilege and oppression to a client as privilege cannot be control and it can affect a client daily lives. Privilege can be separated in to unearned entitlement and conferred dominance kinds and one is more pernicious than the other. Both types of privilege are not acceptable when working with clients as both types create discrimination for example, one type are simply things of value that everyone should have but which only some people do haven and the second goes a step further by giving one group power over another group.
