The many characters in María la del Barrio create many overlapping layers to the concepts and relationships in the show. María Hernandez was a garbage picker until her godmother’s untimely death. The priest at her church found her a new home with the millionaire, Fernando de la Vega. When she arrived at the de la Vega mansion, everyone in the house opposed María’s presence. Lupe is another maid in the house, and unlike Carlota she is a mother figure to María. Fernando’s wife, Victoria, Luis Fernando and his cousin Soraya, and a maid named Carlota insulted her until she cried.
