Research has shown that it is valuable for school-aged children to explore and cope with thoughts and feelings that arise during times of bereavement. A national poll conducted by the New York Life Foundation and the National Alliance for Grieving Children surveyed 531 bereaved children/teenagers 18 years and under who had experienced the death of a parent or sibling ("National Poll of Bereaved Children & Teenagers", n.d.). Two reasons why students found small group grief counseling helpful as indicated by research is indicated that meeting other people who are going through grief like them (76%) and indicated making new friends (62%) ("National Poll of Bereaved Children & Teenagers", n.d.).
