The influence of Christianity to the Characters in the book

Uncle Tom’s Cabin was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe after the Fugitive Slave Act, and this book became one of the most popular book in nineteenth century. Uncle Tom’s Cabin has positively influenced the abolishing movement of slavery in America, and also sharpened the social contrast among the North and South in United State in some sense. Some scholars believed that this book is one cause of the burst of American Civil War in 1861. Moreover, when the American President Abraham Lincoln met Mrs. Stowe, he called her “the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war.”, which was quoted by many other writers later.

Shelby, to sell uncle Tom and Harry, the son of a female slave- Elisa. Mrs. Shelby, a kind and religious women, who was loved by all the slaves, was angered by her husband’s behavior but had no choice to changed the situation. Elisa was the mother of little Harry, and she took Harry to run away to get rid of the fate to be sold. Uncle Tom was an honest and tolerant man, and he took the worst fate to preserve other salves from selling by his master. All the characters were influenced deeply by different interpretation of Christianity.

To begin with, religion influence the main character critically. Uncle Tom sincerely believed the Christianity and strictly regulated himself by the Christian doctrine. Even though in the darkest time in his life, he still read his favorite Bible, and got the courage and confidence from the book to persist. However, the Bible had both positive and negative impacts on Tom. On the one hand, Tom is tolerant, philanthropic and brave in self-sacrifice due to the faith in Christianity, but on the other hand, his faith limited his desire to fight for his fate just as Elisa
