Mestizaje is highly reflected in the Mexican culture because it demonstrates where we came from and how it played a role in the colonization period that almost entirely wiped out the Indigenous population. Given these points, I view this blending as an act of survival because during this period the Indians did not have a choice to believe what they wanted to believe in under the Spaniards rule. After being outnumbered by Spaniards, and the killings of the Indigenous rulers it was a tragic and horrifying time for them. They fear for themselves, family and others of being killed instantly, be put up for slavery or watch other females get raped by other Spaniards.
