In the short story, “The Interlopers,” Saki uses a Person vs Person conflict and a Person vs Nature conflict to drive the story forward.
One significant conflict in “The Interlopers” is Person vs Person due to Ulrich von Gradwitz searching for Georg Znaeym in his forest and is out for blood, and then how later in the story there is a flashback to the past so the reader can get a better picture on how the Znaeym and the Gradwitz families get into a fight over land that the Gradwitz took from the Znaeym family who illegally owned it. First, at the beginning of the story, Ulrich von Gradwitz is patrolling his forest in quest of his enemy, Georg Znaeym.According to the text, “Ulrich von Gradwitz patrolled the dark forest in quest of a human enemy”

First, near the middle of the story after a slight hesitation between George Znaeym and Ulrich Von Gradwitz lightning strikes and drops tree branch on the two men. According to the text “A fierce shriek of the storm had been answered by a splitting crash over their heads and are they could leap aside, a mass of falling beech tree had thundered down on them” (84). This represents a Person vs. Nature conflict because a tree falls on both Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym as they are about to kill each other. This is significant to the story because it traps them for the rest of the story. While they are trapped they resolve their feud or may have died. Next, at the end of the story, Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym are still stuck under the tree and when they yell for help wolves come. According to the text “Wolves” (88). This represents a Person vs. Nature conflict because when Georg Znaeym and Ulrich von Gradwitz get stuck under tree, they decide to call out for help and instead of their men hearing the wolves hear them. This is significant to the story because they just meded their relationship and decided not to kill each other when the wolves come a probably kill them.
