As far as the last 100 years goes, the internet is by far the most important invention in our society. First of all, the internet is obviously a necessity in the modern world. The internet creates social contact between people who may live across the globe from one another. With online dating and social networking, there is a high chance that you will meet someone who you never would have without the internet. An astounding 500 million people visit Facebook each day, for an average of 3.5 hours of social networking daily! With all of this long distance interaction, say between someone from China and someone from the US, there is bound to be a whole lot of cultural diffusion going on. People literally can’t live without the internet. Studies show that 1 in 8 Americans are addicted to the internet, that’s 50 kids in our school, 2 in this class alone! This clearly shows the huge impact that internet has on our lives.
In addition, the internet allows for information and ideas to be accessed and spread faster than ever. An enormous amount of people, nearly 2.5 billion, use it and have access to it. Of that 2.5 billion, 70% of them use it every day, for their jobs, school or entertainment. The internet is very convenient; it allows people to have access to almost everything they need, except food and water of course. There is no need to leave the house to hear news and socialize and no need for a TV, we have Netflix and Hulu for that.
