Imagine this: aliens and alien ships are landing in your neighborhood and they are invading everyone’s houses. How would you feel? Two authors, Ray Bradbury and Steven Millhauser, both wrote stories dealing with invasions but had two completely different views and scenarios. In “Zero Hour” by Ray Bradbury and in “The Invasion from Outer Space” by Steven Millhauser, both authors wrote about invasion and use literary structures to emphasize the negative or positive impact of the invasion. To begin with, in “Zero Hour”, by Ray Bradbury, Bradbury portrays life during an invasion as chaotic, violent, scary, tense and horrific. Also Ray Bradbury characterizes Mink as sneaky, evil, bossy, and manipulative. As stated in the comic panel 5, Mink says, “‘Do that, and bring that over here. No, here. Like that. See?’” (Bradbury, comic). This shows that Mink is very bossy and she wants everything to be done her way. In addition, Bradbury characterizses Mrs. Morris as oblivious, naïve. Steve also uses ir0ony to describe the story. In the story it says “From the beginning, we weer prepared, we knew just what to do , for hadn’t we seen it all a hundred times?” (Millhauser, paragraph 1) This shows that the society is very calm and they aren’t stressed out about the invasion. They have seen it 100 times so its nothing new to them. Towards the middle of the story, it says “we had wanted blood, crrsuhed bones, howls of agony” (Millhauser, paragraph 4) This shows irony because the society said they were prepared at the beginning for anything and at the same time they said they wanted to have something else.
