Like the Joads and many other families, my family did not always live in California. Driven out of their homes by life-threatening dust storms and lack of nourishing food, many families had to find a new life elsewhere. Many young Australians take some time to travel the world before settling down. Most of them return, some do not. My mom’s siblings all took time to travel and they all returned and now live in Australia. After living and working in England for a while, my mom continued to travel throughout Europe, the Middle East, and then finally, around the United States. She finally settled on the west coast because it’s climate is similar to that of Australia and had made a lot of friends moving to California. So Berkeley became her new home and there she studied and worked at the Acupressure Institute with her friend.
