The most vocal and outspoken figures for Chicano struggles is Jose Antonio Burciaga. He expressed his view on Chicano experience through his poems, books and most famously his murals. The mural that captivated his fame and was almost more know than himself was his mural of Da Vinci’s last supper and taking a twist on it. The “The Last Supper of Chicano Heroes” is his most well known works for just like Esther Hernandez painting of the Virgin of Guadalupe it takes a traditional figue out into different setting. In this mural Jesus is no at the center of the table rather the Virgin of Guadalupe is as she represents the people of Mexico along with Chicanos. The mural holds a completely different meaning from how Da Vinci originally painted it as the Apostles were all in doubt and wondering what each of them had done to betray Jesus while in Burciaga’s painting all of the figures there are proud of their actions and have no sense of doubt for what they did. It holds honest and peaceful figures such as Martin Luther King Jr and Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz to the more violent figures of Che Guevara and Emiliano Zapata. The setting of the table is very significant as it isn't held in a palace like in the original but in a simple corn field signifying the origins of all Hispanic work. The aspect that ties the whole piece together is the quote that follows through the whole table “...and to all those who died, scrubbed floors, wept and fought for us”, it honors and applauses all those in the table as they were leading heros for all Chicanos, they were the voices and the activist who granted and inspired Chicano pride in every Chicano.
