When a passionate and complex conservative, Antonin Scalia joined the Court three decades ago, “originalism” was not considered. Scalia wanted the American people and the courts to think about the original intent and how it relates to the meaning of the United States Constitution. In 1996, Antonin Scalia assessed the legacy of the great liberal Justice William Brennan: “He is probably the most influential justice of the century.” Antonin Scalia set the terms of debate in the law.
