A famous childhood movie, known as The Lion King, is thought to be very innocent. What many people may not know is that it is based off of the play Hamlet, written by Shakespeare. It is strange that a Disney family movie was based off a tragedy written by the famous Shakespeare. The story line and characters resemble many aspects within the play. When taking a closer look, one can see the character relations with Nala, Simba, Scar, etc., as well as a relation between the plots of the two stories. In The Lion King, there is a cub prince named Simba, whose father was recently murdered. This relates hand in hand with hamlet, due to the fact that he is a prince whose father was murdered as well. Simba is described as “betrayed, rejected, running from responsibility, growing strong through adversity” (Kjos). In comparison to Simba, Hamlet is described as “a man of radical contradictions—he is reckless yet cautious, courteous yet uncivil, tender yet ferocious” (Mabillard). The Lion King may be a film adaptation of the famous Shakespearian play, but there are some differences that needed to occur for it to be a children’s movie. It was stated that “film adaptations aren’t always true to the books, ranging from a change of scenery to character changes” (Evans). This is true in the comparison of The Lion King and the play Hamlet. The movie seemed to have a fairy tale style, with a happy ending, whereas the play was a tragedy. Simba became the king and moved on to have a family, while Hamlet “was predominantly heartbreak and relentless desolation” (Comparative Analysis). The ending needed to change, in order to make the story child friendly. If everyone would have died or Scar had taken over, then it wouldn’t have done so well in the box office for family movies.
