As I sit on a rock above the ocean, I realize that it is almost time for my interview with Ariel, from The Little Mermaid. I dive into the ocean and glance down to see a mermaid with long, red hair. I rush over to introduce myself. After I notice that she seems to be in a rush, she invites me inside and I ask if she had time for a few questions on the topic of water pollution. Although the idea of getting rid of pollution seems to be simple, many still haven’t taken action to solve the problem. Most of the pollution comes from the land and people dumping trash in the ocean. If we care more for the environment and stop putting trash out into the ocean, water pollution could definitely decrease.

How else can pollution in the ocean affect the environment and the animals that live there?” “Animals in the ocean can be affected by oil spills, consuming trash, and the process it takes to clean up after oil spills.” Says Ariel. In other words, “Spilled oil can harm living things because its chemical constituents are poisonous” (Office of Response and Restoration). “In addition, do you think the rate of pollution continue to rise if humans don’t take action?” I ask. “Yes, It says here, ‘between 1% and 11% of all marine life has succumbed to extinction every year of the 40-year period between 1975 and 2015’ (Pollution Sollutions).” Ariel answers. After a few seconds, I remember a question I was very curious about. “Also, What is the main cause of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?” “Most of the plastic debris in the Garbage Patch is from land-based sources and survives the long trip there because conventional plastic does not biodegrade and current bioplastics do not biodegrade in the marine environment … Some people may envision a plastic island in the middle of the ocean, but this 'Garbage Patch' could better be described as a weak plastic soup dispersed over a large area where plastics in various stages of degradation are suspended in the upper layers of the water column”
