Like all historical events, the Boston Massacre was the result of long and short-term

causes. In the long-term, it was the culmination of long-standing political tensions

between Britain and her colonies, which commenced with the Stamp Act of 1765. The

Stamp Act led to American resentment and mistrust of the British, creating an

irresolvable rift between the two countries. Most people living in the colonies had left

England in pursuit of greater economic freedom18, and the establishment of a Board to

oversee taxes was likely to be seen as interference by a remote government. All
