To begin with, symbols are a very important part in a story. They basically are words with double meaning, or objects that represent something else. There are many symbols in many different stories. They help you to understand what the book is supposed to be about. There are many great symbols mentioned in The Lord of the Flies. The three main symbols are, the conch, piggy's glasses and the pigs head. There are other symbols but those ones seemed to be the most mentioned in the story. The first great symbol in this book is the conch. The conch represents civilization, rule of law and leadership. The boys consider Ralph to be their leader. When ralph blows into the conch all the boys gather around him. The conch was also used to talk, when they boys had a meeting whoever had the conch could talk. When Jack made his own group he became chief and everything got unorganized and started to fall apart. This is why the conch represents organization too. Piggy came up eith all the things for leadership which makes him a leader too, in a way. The next great symbol in the book is piggy's glasses. Piggy's glasses represent technology and science. The pig's head represents inhuman, cruelty, and evil. This must be an important symbol in the book because it is the title of the book. The pig’s head is actually the lord of the flies. Goulding must have made it that important to say that people are evil when there are no rules. Many people might disagree with Goulding but he has very good reasons from the symbols he uses because he applies them with the characters in the book and most people can relate the characters to themselves.
