Tradition or Torture: An Analysis of “The Lottery”
Pelting stones at innocent individuals is an dishonourable tradition and writing your name on paper for their own death. Innocent people should not write there names for their own death and then get pelted by rock solid stones till their breath. The people should not be forced to participate in this tradition if they want to and also people that have never done anything wrong in the worst place. Everyone has the right to stand up for themselves and not put their name on the ballot and they should live their full life without worrying about getting killed for no reason at all.

Firstly, the people of the village are so innocent, that they are eager to participate and get it over with. When the Hutchisons were talking to each other, they said, “ Get up there, Bill,” Mrs.Hutchinson said.(30). This shows the innocence of the characters, as the couple talk about the consequences if they participate in the lotter which could of been death. It shows how eager Mrs.Hutchisons is to participate. She encourages her husband to go forward and participate. If they were not innocent, they would cause a problem and try everything not to participate. Secondly, the villagers have blindly just accepted the fact of murder and death, this shows the innocence and loss of hope. Death is not forgotten, “ Although the villagers had forgotten the ritual and lost the original black box, they still remembered to use stones.(76). This shows how they’ll accept any change but they won’t accept the change of this bizarre ritual. They all may talk about rituals, history and traditions but the truth is that they accept the fact of death in the tradition and don’t want to change that even if they have done anything wrong. All that remains now of the tradition is violence of innocent people. Everyone is to eager to accept what remains, as they pick up stones and carry this horrendous tradition every single
