The village’s tradition called the lottery is a violent murder that occurs annually with the whole town involved. It is something that the village has, over time, lost the understanding of the original meeting, however they still try to keep the tradition going on year after year. Even though this is a horrific event for such a small and friendly town they do not feel the need or even think to change this ritual. These ordinary people, who have just come from work or from their homes and will soon return home for lunch, easily kill someone when they are told to. The Lottery consists of handing out little slips of paper and if you receive the one that is marked it means you are to die by the hand of the people of the village. The people of the village will turn their back on anyone at random, and their only crime is that they choose the slip of paper with a black dot on the paper. Each year someone new is chosen and killed for the lottery, even children are not safe.

The black box is old and tattered and is practically falling apart after the many years of use by the village. However, the villagers are not willing to replace the black box. They are attached to this particular box because of a story that was told that this black box was made from pieces of other older black boxes.
