I know we discussed this idea a bit in class, but something that’s still interesting to me about The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance was the power struggle between the East and the West. The film sets up an idea of a high class and refined east in opposition to the wild uncivilized west; and I noticed that it goes on to show us the difference between them in two ways. In one sense the east and west debate are physically personified within the two main characters. There’s Ransom Stoddard with his rational ideals and his law degree who believes that he could take on Liberty through the justice of the court system.
