“Gentleness, self-sacrifice, and generosity are the exclusive possession of no one race or religion” (Gandhi). “The Martian”, a novel by Andy Weir is about a character named Mark Watney who is left behind on mars because he was hit by a satellite and everyone thought he died, Watney is all alone on mars and finds himself ways to survive and communicate to the people on earth. His crewmates and the staff at NASA make sacrifices throughout the novel so he could be brought back to earth safely. The novel portrays an excellent theme of self-sacrifice and delivers a great message that each life matters. Each character in the novel is sacrificing in many ways whether the sacrifices are small or big.

Maybe this is the reason why Lewis is sacrificing so much and is willing to do anything to save Mark. When Mark is hit by the satellite during a storm, the rest of the crew is ordered to proceed to the MAV whereas commander Lewis stays back to look for Mark and tells Martinez to leave without her if she is not able to make it on time. “You really think I’ll leave you behind?” said Martinez, “I just ordered you to” Lewis replies (Weir,12.111-112). Lewis is commanding Martinez to leave without her if she is not back on time, that is one tough decision to make and we can see that she is sacrificing herself so she could find Mark and bring him along with them back to the earth. Commander Lewis has surely sacrificed a lot for Mark but rest of the crew has also sacrificed important things in their life for Mark. The crew voluntarily decided to go back to mars to save Watney, which means that they won’t see their family for a long time. The crew could have decided not to go back to mars and see their families, instead they made sacrifice of their family and went back to save Mark. We see this when all the crew members are
