Repercussions of Fear
Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. Everyone is afraid of someone--whether person, place, or thing. Fear can impact us in either a negative or positive way. However, fear can also help us by inspiring restraint, withholding irrational acts, and motivating one’s survival. Fear can also be harmful by infecting us with paranoia or clouding rational thoughts. All main characters experience fear in “The Tell-Tale Heart”, “Pit and the Pendulum”, and “The Masque of Red Death”. In these texts, Edgar Allen Poe uses symbolism, irony, and imagery to illustrate how fear distorts the narrator’s minds and the consequences that follow.

In “The Tell-Tale Heart”, the narrator kills the old man because the craze of his eye. The narrator says, “dissemble no more! I admit the deed!--tear up the planks!--here, here!--it is the beating of his hideous heart.” (78). After the narrator killing the old man, the narrator hid the corpse before the police came. One of the neighbors told the police about the unnatural screaming. Soon after the police came, they searched and the narrator made them search really well. The narrator made the cops stay so they can talk. A while after they stood, the narrator heard a heartbeat coming from where the corpse was placed at. The narrator felt guilty about the death that he committed. He tried his best not to tell the police that he killed the old mad but ironically he did after. Think about what you do before actually doing it because it lead to serious or not so serious consequences. In “The Masque of Red Death”, Prince Prospero tries his best to stay away from the Red Death. Thus, Prince Prospero is a prince that is greedy, he thinks he can vanquish the Red Death. The narrator says, “There --was a sharp cry--and the dagger dropped the gleaming upon the sable carpet, upon which, instantly afterwards, fell prostrate in the death of Prince Prospero.” (61). Before Prince Prospero was killed by the Red Death, the prince isolated himself inside the castle. He went through seven rooms, in the last room he had a masquerade ball. The
