A dystopian society is the opposite of a utopian society. Even though the citizens may believe that they are in a perfect utopian society they are usually oppressed and controlled with propaganda and told that the outside world is something to be feared. The citizens usually have to conform to a specific uniform expectation, individuality and independent thinking is frowned upon. There is usually a ruler or figurehead that is worshipped and feared and is very corrupt by power, who also has constant surveillance over the citizens. Dystopian societies are a common plot line for books and movies; one great example of this is The Maze Runner series by James Dashner.
