Generations have passed by, generation to generation. Every generation is connected to each other. Quite often, people wonder how generations are connected. The things that keep being followed throughout one generation is keeping them connected. Even though something has been passed down for many generations, if it keeps the pattern, everyone will be one. The short stories, "The Medicine Bag" by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve and "Who are You Today, Maria?" by Judith Ortiz Cofer show examples of how generations are tied together. Tradition and items connect people of different generations. Tradition is something that keeps occurring throughout each generation. Items are passed down if it's valuable, so it would be received to each generation.

In "Who are You Today, Maria?" Maria's grandmother treasures a shawl handmade by Maria's mother. It is a very important item to Maria's grandmother, which makes it the same for her. One simple item can be known through all different generations, making them all connected. Also, in the "The Medicine Bag," the medicine bag is passed down from many generations because it was valuable to one person and it became a pattern for keeping it worthy and letting every generation know about it. Martin's grandfather has passed down the medicine bag to Martin which means both their generations are connected because Martin has interacted with another generation. Therefore, generations can be connected by even one single item that is valuable to some people, but not to other
