It’s hard to conceive that anyone could ever abuse a child. Whether it is verbal abuse, physical abuse, and or sexual abuse these crimes on children, or even other adults take place every day. It comes to no surprise that many people have in some way either have witnessed abuse, or experienced abuse, or know someone who was abused. Therefore, after reading such poems such as Diane Thiel’s poem “The Minefield” and Robert Hayden’s “The Whipping” one can’t help but to sympathize as to the emotional pain one can endure from these violent acts. Together these poems have several differences but one can attest to the close connection they have of the fear and struggle these poor children endured growing up in these abusive homes.
