Levels of Suspense
Connell and Poe are both authors of short stories that give many different pieces of the suspenseful mood. In Connell’s story “The Most Dangerous Game” he gives pieces of suspense one after another which is more appealing to the modern audience. In Poe’s story “The Cask of Amontillado” he gradually gives pieces of suspense at a slower pace. Both authors use this suspenseful mood, but take different approaches at giving them.
The author of “The Most Dangerous Game,” Connell, uses the suspenseful mood in a faster pace which grabs the reader's attention. “He paused almost beneath the tree, dropped to his knees and studied the ground (12). This piece gives the suspenseful mood and grabs the attention of the reader when Rainsford tries to kill Zaroff with his tree trap. Connell is great at creating this suspenseful mood by attacking the reader one after the other getting them excited and wondering what's going to happen next. Therefore, this is appealing to a much to a much more modern audience.

“Although for the most part, it remains a mystery throughout ‘The Cask of Amontillado’ by Edgar Allen Poe why the narrator harbors such hatred toward Fortunato, this missing information serves to build more suspense and to make the reader more in tune with the words Montresor speaks as he leads his enemy to death (Bentor). This excerpt is given by a man who believed Poe uses suspense in a more effective way. “Connell develops suspense through dialogue, setting and foreshadowing (Sasnowski).” This quote was given and I feel it supports Connell because Poe doesn’t use all those to get the suspenseful mood.
