The Motivation Of Meursault In The Stranger

The novel The Stranger, starts off with Meursault receiving a telegram saying that his mother had died. He soon tells us that he is not able to take care of his mother, so he had placed her in a home for the aged persons. After he puts his mother in home for the aged, he says that the apartment that him and maman shared now felt big and empty. He could finally do what he wanted and he never had to worry about her disagreeing with him.

Meursault says that it is difficult for him to find motivation for him to make such a significant journey for him to just sit there for a few hours with little to no conversation with his mother. Meursault talks about how he and his mother used to live together. she would always sit and watch him, but hardly ever spoke to him. Meursault never really pursued a friendship with him. Raymond was just someone who would come over for dinner occasionally and someone he would go to the beach with. He was abusive to his girlfriend and wanted Meursault to lie for him once he got caught abusing her. Meursault had no reason not to lie for him so he did. His relationship with Raymond was one sided. So this was definitely not the best friendship for Meursault to have because it would soon turn into a situation that Meursault wishes would have never happened.

The other one sided relationship that Meursault had part in was with the Priest that came to try and change his mind about his religion. Meursault was not going to change his mind about how he felt about his religion, he thought the whole thing was stupid and that he needed no religion. He believed that there was no life after death, therefore he had no need for the priest to try and change his mind. Because Meursault knew he wasn't changing his mind he basically had no need for the priest, therefore the one sided
