Robert Cormier’s interesting story, “The moustache,” takes place at the hospital when Mike, the grandson, went to go visit his grandma. Mike’s grandmother has arteriosclerosis, which gives her memory loss. She sometimes has good or bad days. Mike got lucky and went on a good day. One theme in, “The moustache,” is regret can affect your future. Mike went to visit his grandmother and she was saying details that Mike knew it didn't make sense. He was very confused when she started talking about the birds outside that weren't even there. The grandmother describes how Mike use to love clothes, which wasn't true. Mike wonders, “Are old people in places like this so lonesome, so abandoned that they go wild when someone visits?” This quote shows that Mike thinks something is wrong. …show more content…
Mike’s grandmother said, “Don’t say anything. I've waited so long for this moment. To be here. With you. I wondered what I would say if suddenly you walked in that door like other people have done. I’ve thought and thought about it. And I finally made up my mind-- I’d ask you to forgive me. I was to proud to ask before.” Then after Mike's grandmother had said this to Mike he figured out that she had him mistaken for her dead husband, that had a moustache like Mike. This shows that something was holding on inside of his grandma that she didn't let go. And she has always been thinking about it, even though she has memory loss. By the end of the story Mike's grandmother is begging her dead husband for forgiveness. Mike didn't know what to do when she said, “Mike, Mike. Say it Mike. Say you forgive me, Mike. I’ve waited all these years… Say I forgive you Meg.” Mike told his grandmother that she forgives him and she sighs with relief then fall asleep.
