The classic horror film, “The Mummy”, has made multiple appearance in the popular culture. Hollywood has made many series about the mummy and many remakes of the film because of the interest the audience have on them. The first most essential film of, “The Mummy” was directed by Karl Freund in 1932 and the second was redirected by Stephen Sommers in 1999. Karl’s version of the mummy is in black and white unlike Stephen’s version. Although both films have many similarities and differences which makes them unique, they both capture Skal’s idea about how horror reflects the fears of society. The deadly hunt for science gone wrong is definitely depicted throughout the film as Evelyn O’Connell, the explore, digs deeper into finding the truth and facts about the Egyptian Pharaohs but soon find out that she is also linked to the Egyptian history. She turns out to be the reincarnation of Princess Ankh-es-en-amon and is hunted by the Pharaoh Imhotep in order to resurrect the princess. Skal’s idea about horror and how popular culture moves along in society is that the previous generous horror becomes the next generations mascot. This is shown as people in the 1999s are no longer afraid of mummy unlike society in the 30s and 40s to the point where they would dress up as mummies for Halloween as a joke. This is also implemented in the remake in 1999 as the movie transition from a horror movie into a more action packed adventure movie. Although society is no longer afraid of mummies, director Stephen Sommers adds another monster in the movie and that monster is the bugs.
