Nature of Humanity In Prometheus Bond, by Bryan Doerries, Prometheus provided humanity to the mortals by providing them with fire. In the first portion of the play, Prometheus gets chained to a rock which symbolizes, how he committed a very sinful act in the eyes of the audience. Behind everything was Zeus, the mastermind that did not want humanity to exist and would do anything to get his way, even if that can ruin his friendship with Prometheus. Throughout the play, we encounter how Prometheus betrayed his own gods by giving the humans a survival technique, that they were completely unaware of and was suffered tremendously because of it. Prometheus sacrifices himself and uses his intelligence and knowledge to bring hope to the mortals. Prometheus tries to make the audience understand that being lost is difficult, as in not having any fire or light to survive. We see that Prometheus brings people together and helps them to gain hope in themselves by bringing technology into their world. Technology symbolizes the mode of communication and that brings power into the world which creates new cultures. In the play Prometheus says, “I helped them mine the earth for iron, bronze, silver and gold, and showed them how the mold metal. I taught them everything they know. All of their arts descended from me. I gave humans their humanity” shows how Prometheus is proud of the accomplishment that he has made (Doerries 340). The nature of humanity is very important to him because he lost all of his power and honor for the mortals by providing them with everything. Although Prometheus had power because he was a god, he was still punished so the power that he had in himself disappeared. That explains how he was fine with getting his liver pecked everyday, symbolizing how he was fine with loosing all of his
