In the story “The Necklace” by Guy De Maupassant, the protagonist Mathilde Loisel is a dynamic character. Madame Loisel, the main character, thinks a necklace she has borrowed contains real diamonds, after losing the necklace, she goes out to buy a “replica” that is far more expensive than the original. This purchase puts her and her husband into a fearful debt leading them into true poverty. As said in the text, “Madame Loisel came to know the ghastly life of object poverty..This fearful debt must be paid off.”(Maupassant pg 6) In this quote Madame Loisel interferes with true poverty, she has to pay off all the debt she created and it's hard work. In the beginning Mathilde seemed to be selfish and desiring to live beyond her own means. She washed the plates...She washed the dirty linen…”(pg 7) In this quote Madame Loisel is in the process of having to learn how to do all the hard work in the house, the very unpleasant duties in the kitchen and she had to do other things like wash plates and dirty linen. After losing the necklace, physical change shows in Madame Loisel, she has to work long and hard to pay the money back for the replacement necklace she bought. After ten years of paying off debt Madame Loisel looked old, tired and unrecognizable, and now she is actually poor, as said in the text “At the end of ten years everything, the user's charges and the accumulation of superimposed interest...Madame Loisel looked old now...she had become like all other strong hard, coarse women of the poor household.”- In this quote the author explains the aftermath of paying off the harsh debt. Madame Loisel looks much older than she is, and now is actually living the life of other “strong hard, coarse women of the poor
