Overall Imperialism was a positive effect on the globe due to new, more modern, westernized ideas being introduced to less developed countries.
In China, the positive effects of Imperialism outweighed the negative. Of course there were negative effects like the widespread use of the highly addictive drug Opium throughout the country due to British imports, but overall Imperialism was a positive for China. When the British came over to China they brought fabulous new technology like clocks, globes, musical instruments, and even a hot air balloon to show off. Although the Emperor was not impressed, this was beneficial to the Chinese because they could now utilize these new devices to make their life easier. In Indonesia there was a rigid social class system with the Dutch at the top. In Malaysia the native Malays became a minority to the Chinese due to the British encouragement for Chinese workers to immigrate to Malaysia. Although effects like these were present, there were many positive effects like the transformation of an economy that was once self-contained and agriculturally based to a booming industry involved in the production of commodity exports. Sanitation and Health greatly improves due to the aid of European Countries which allowed for a longer and healthier life. One of the greatest positive effects of Imperialism in Southeast Asia was the discovery of new products important in the World Trade markets. These products included but were not limited to sugar cane, coffee, cocoa, rubber, coconuts, bananas, and pineapples which would greatly augment Southeast Asia’s economy. Imperialism helped countries in Southeast Asia develop leading to things like Industrialization and cleaner, healthier living
