Langston Hughes’ deep and well thought out poem, “The Negro by the River” incorporates many touching thoughts and effective virtues that shape our souls. His use of repetition reminds the reader of their roots and that at the bottom of everyone’s hearts we are all come from the same place. I wish that people would read this poem and understand that skin color does not define a person. This poem presents that and I like that approach and I think that the many poetic devices help prove that point.

The repetition of “I’ve known rivers” waters down the sadness to an airy feel and representation of how people were once equal. The setting in this poem is very important and contributes to the fiery imagery that goes through your head as a movie
