In the excerpt “The New Civil Rights”, the author, Kenji Yoshino, shares his thoughts on the ideology of individuals covering their true selves in order to conform to society norms. Yoshino’s argument was based around the concept that one shouldn’t have to cover his true identity because one should be able to express himself without being judged by others. His impeccable structure of writing and well-developed syntax allows the reader to follow his argumentative points in supporting his concept. Yoshino constructed his arguments seamlessly by using examples of famous people such as…Margaret Thatcher, Martin Sheen, Rosie O’Donnell.. in order for the readers to relate and have a better understand of Yoshino’s argument on covering. Personally, I would define covering when a person is trying to convey an unrealistic idea about oneself in order to please another individual or in Yoshino’s case conform to a group's customs. The connection I made with the author was that we were both in closet gay men that had to cover ourselves up in order to conform to today’s society standard. Although my counterargument is that I do believe a person should cover themselves if they are in a specific situation in which others might cause harm to them just for being themselves that they should accept that it’s is okay because they are protecting themselves. That being said in my opinion the one flaw in having to cover yourself up doesn’t outweigh the beneficial freedom and expression of identity in not covering in which I stand on the side of agreeing with Yoshino's
