There are nine circles which categorize the punishments for different types of sinners in Dante’s inferno. The more a crime gets worse the harder the punishment would be. The story says each punishment is located in different areas in hell. It is also states that the devil himself is after the 9th circle which is known as the pit of hell. The first circle is for the Unbaptized/Virtuous Pagans. They are struck with grief from a lack of God’s presence. I think they are punished with this because they denied god when they were alive. The second circle is for the lustful. They are punished by being blown about by violent and endless wind. I think they are punished with this so they can feel uncomfortable extremely which the opposite of the feelings one might get is by being lustful. The third circle is for the gluttons. They are bombarded with rain, hail, and black snow. Hoarders are forced to push boulders to the center of the circle while spenders are forced to push boulders back out of the center of the circle. I think they are punished with this to feel what true labor is. The fifth circle is for the wrathful and the sullen. The wrathful are engaged with combat with one another on the surface of the River Styx while the sullen are sunk to the bottom of the same river. I think they are punished like this so they can “drown” in their sorrow. The sixth circle are for the heretics. They are punished by being locked in burning stone coffins.
