Gothic Literature is a type of literature that includes troubled pasts, eerie scenery, and supernatural elements. These elements come together to create a suspenseful story that keeps a reader, or watcher if it is in film, on the edge of their seats. Most of these stories take place in large castles or estates, and a large recurring theme in gothic stories is the concept of a forbidden wing of a house. In “The Old Nurse’s Story”the east wing happens to be the forbidden and in , Beauty and the Beast, and Rebecca, the west wing is the seemingly haunted area in the house. In these three stories, the forbidden wings of the house act as an isolating factor to the main female character and they create a supernatural effect. “The Old Nurse’s Story” is the tale of nanny while she took care of a young girl named Rosamund at a large estate. When Belle first arrives, the Beast forbids her to enter the west wing which immediately makes her feel alone and confused. She doesn’t know why this wing is forbidden or what he could possibly be hiding from her there. Once curiosity gets the best of her, she decides to enter the wing and explore. She finds many scary things such as spooky statues, broken mirrors, and an enchanted, glowing rose. Because Beauty and the Beast is a film, they can use visual elements in the west wing to create the supernatural effect. The movie also has spooky music in the background while in the west wing to make the experience more sensory and heightened emotionally.
