In the United States everyone opposes child abuse, but there are still parents who abuse their children. Even though they are well aware that it is not a moral act. In the short story “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” written by Ursula K. Le Guin, the whole city thrives off the abuse of one child under the city and some can live with that, but others know that it is horribly immoral and walk away and never look back into that city, they once deemed amazing. “Some of them understand why, and some do not, but they all understand that their happiness, the beauty of their city, the tenderness of their friendships, the health of their children... depend wholly on this child's abominable misery.” Moral or immoral? That question has yet to be answered. Do people abuse one child, to live in a city of happiness and joy? Although, there are many people who walk away with fear instilled in them, but they never want to look back on that part of their lives. This can be compared to those people who witness the abuse in Omelas and just have to leave “The Perfect Utopia.”“They leave Omelas, they walk ahead into the darkness, and they do not come back. The place they go towards is a place even less imaginable to most of us than the city of happiness.” Even though in the short story “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” the abuse of one child is considered moral, since the whole city thrives off of it, but is not considered morally correct in our society. Since some people recognize how immoral Omelas is, they walk out the front gates because the abuse of one child is too much to handle.
