In Crane’s story “The Open Boat” the character the oiler (billie), represents the average person. His duty was to pretty much hold everyone together and maintains an image of heroism, and strength even through most difficult situations. He was the strongest and hardest worker of the crew members which made him appear to be the “fittest” and have the best odds to survive the sea. He was the best at rowing and he suggests the plans to the captain in which they should take, and the Captain follows. The oiler is the only man who actually ended up dying in the sea.
