Many of us have had odd fixations and interests in random things over the years. Personally for me it was space and the airport, but for the older man in this story, his interest was amongst golf balls. The writer of this essay, John McPhee, is particularly interested in the many reasons that he expresses to us. There are many different ways he tells about himself too, and a few examples of that would be the use of comparison, irony, and deep description, to connect himself with the subject. Though there are other ways, those are the ones that stood out to me the most. First of all, comparison is a large playing factor in this because we see it many times in the small excerpt given to us. An example of this would be when McPhee compares his …show more content…
This shows how he characterizes the Orange Trapper and himself because he shows his love for it through comparison. By saying it was like an Apple product, it shows that he values it the way that people value their expensive devices, and by saying that you could conduct an orchestra with it shows that he feels like it could be the leader of something big in a sense. Throughout the rest of the essay, there are many other instances where the author makes a good comparison, like this one. This exemplifies the characterization of the connection he has to it as soon as he gets it because it shows the amount of attention he is paying to it. Using words such as “beautiful”, and “orchestra” can give us an idea of how it may look as well. The use of descriptive words can help in more ways than one, and it can help both the writer and the reader. When a writer writes with descriptive words, it can show the reader how dedicated, or passionate, the writer may be. For the writer, it can be an easy way to get a tone across, by using adjectives that align with their beliefs. Lastly, another way I think that the author uses characterization is that he uses a lot of irony. Whether in a humorous way or not, there is a lot of it used in this essay, and even in the small excerpt that was presented to us. Irony is a way that someone can express themselves through a type of sarcasm or humor. I think iron brings more personality to a text, more than just descriptive
