The Orphanage or El Orfanato is a Spanish horror film about an orphanage that has been abandoned for years and also has a haunting past. The movie has a reverse chronological plot starting from Laura’s past. When Laura, an orphan who once stayed there, reminisces about her stay on the Spanish shore. As a child, this place help some of her fondest moments and wishes to revisit with her husband and her child (who we later figure out is adopted). 30 years from then, they decide to reopen up the building for children with disabilities. Everything starts off well until her son, Simon, begins acting strange and dangerous towards himself and others. They think that he is acting out because they were not showing him enough love and attention because they were focused on Open House. Laura’s memories begin to flood back and she sinks into the sinister thoughts that her son is having. There are popular movies that involve hauntings and children. Some examples would be Orphan, The Omen, etc. When I first looked at the movie cover, I thought that it would be a cheesy horror film and that I would be bored halfway through the movie. I decided to look up a trailer to see what I would be spending my time watching. The trailer shocked me and I immediately went to watch the movie so I could figure out what would happen next. The actors and actresses were very skilled with conveying their emotion on scene. Laura's story drew me into the film and had me on the edge of my seat. Their fashion and style didn’t vary from famous celebrities in Hollywood films. I did notice that they spoke really fast which made it hard to keep up with in Spanish. As hard as I wanted to turn English subtitles on, I forced myself to challenge myself and understand it with the Spanish subtitles instead. I have never heard of this movie until I found it on
