In the memoir “The Other Side of the Sky”, Farah Ahmedi shares the message of hope and never giving up. Farah’s life changed dramatically at age seven, living in the war torn country of Afghanistan. Rushing to school one morning at age seven, Farah steps on a landmine and her life takes a dramatic turn. In the poor, war torn country of Afghanistan the hospital and medical conditions are so poor, her very survival is at risk and her leg had to be amputated. A visiting medical team from Germany tries to help Farah by sending her to Germany to get the proper medical care. Farah remains in Germany by herself for a few years to obtain medical care. Finally she is sent back to Afghanistan and her family. While back in Afghanistan, the war was still going on, and Farah’s father and sister become casualties of war. Even after losing half of her family and her leg, Farah remains full of hope and Farah never gives up.
Before this tragic event in Farah’s life, her life was fairly normal, considering she lived in a war torn country, her father worked as a tailor and her mother stayed at home caring for the children.. Farah, had one

This memoir could influence society and the reader by inspiring others to remain hopeful and showing that dreams can really come true even in the worst of times. After Farah moves to America, she reflects upon the events of her life in this quote “Now I don’t want to erase, or forget, or destroy any part of myself. I want to love myself and keep adding to who I am both Afghan and American. And today is not necessarily where it ends”. (Pg:249). At the conclusion of the book Farah is only 19, and reflects upon her lifetime of events thus far in her life. Residing in Chicago, Farah and her mother live live in an apartment, and the experiences of her life, remain fresh in this story. Farah’s story is one of hope and
