"This book is meant to show us how... our destinies can be determined by a single stumble down the wrong path, or a tentative step down the right one." is stated by Author Wes Moore in The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates (XIV). Each choice made is a step toward change and it is our choice which path we choose. This theme is symbolized in the title, with the focus of the book being the very different outcomes of two men with the same name. This book represents two men both named Wes Moore but come from different backgrounds, home lives, and futures changed forever.
The two Wes Moore’s may have come from very different backgrounds, but this should not define their paths. They both grew up in Baltimore at the same time but this is one of the only similarities of the two men’s lives (Moore XI). These two men are from very different economic backgrounds but this is not what defined them. Wes Moore’s parents, Joy and Wes Moore, were both well-educated and successfully attended college (Moore 8). The other Wes Moore’s mother Mary completed a few hours of college credits and desired to complete her degree but due to financial aid was unable to at this time (Moore 17).

This book, The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates, represents the small decisions made in life can affect one’s entire future. The Other Wes Moore cannot simply just blame all his problems on his brother but most also take responsibility for placing himself in the robbery situation. The results of each boy’s future are an accumulative effect of every choice made in their past. Each friend made, grades, and simple actions have such a major impact on life. Overcoming the past and obstacles is a way to achieve all hopes and gives a certain drive to achieve success in everything done.
