“Do you think we’re all just products of our environment” (Moore 126)? In the book “The Other Wes Moore” the writer Wes Moore explores the aspects of the following question. Wes Moore tells a story about two similar boys with the exact same name, whose lives changed regarding their environment. These two boys grew up in the same neighborhood and had similar role models. However, one of the boys received positive influences and ended up being a scholar, a veteran and a business leader. While the other is unintentionally directed towards the wrong path and ended up as a convicted murderer serving a life sentence. There are three major characters that acted like role models to these boys; their fathers, mothers and a person who fills up the missing father figure. Both boys lived without a father, each had an independent mother who sacrificed a lot for them and lastly they had people who acted as a father figure; Tony the brother of the other Wes Moore and sergeant in military school for Wes Moore. Consequently, the father figure models for the Wes Moore's is Tony the other Wes brother and the military sergeant for Wes. By joining military school Wes learns that “...they cared if I succeeded…” (Moore 115). Both his family and the military wants to see Wes succeed and be the best that he can be. Moreover, the other Wes does not have the same supportive people. The only person he can look up to is his brother Tony. “Wes wanted to be just like Tony. Tony wanted Wes to be nothing like him” (Moore 72). The other Wes views his brother as fearless, and he wants to be the same. However tony knows what he had to do in order to gain that title and he does not want his brother to be like him. Both boys make a choice on who to look up to, while one makes a choice that would lead him to the right path, the other chooses that path that he will simply
