The genre of The Outsiders is realistic fiction. The novel shows a social problem that our world still has. Also, the book is realistic fiction, because the lives the characters are facing is still common today.

Protagonist: The main protagonist is Ponyboy a 14 year old old, who is a good student with very good grades in school. He is a “greaser”. “Greaser” is a name that the rich kids in the west side called the poor kids in the east side. Everyone in the east side are greasers. Other protagonists are Ponyboy’s brothers Darry and Sodapop. Darry is very strict to Ponyboy. If Ponyboy gets Bs Darry wants him to get As, and when he gets As Darry wants them to stay As. They deprive the poor kids from the freedom the supposed to get. The rich boys are called “socs”. The socs jump on greasers,wreck houses, and throw beer blasts for kicks. The greasers steal things, drive old souped-up cars, hold up gas stations, and have gang fights.
One day, the socs surrounded Ponyboy and tried to give him a haircut with a knife. They forced him. Luckily Darry came and saved him. That happened to Johnny before. They jumped on him. Ponyboy said Johnny was bruised up with big cuts on his face and arms. From that on, Johnny always kept a pocketknife with him.
Another day they all went to the movie theater. They met a girl named Cherry and a girl named Marcia. They had a very well conversation. Cherry liked Ponyboy a lot. Then their boyfriends Bob and Randy found out that so they wanted to take revenge on Ponyboy and Johnny for picking up their girlfriends. Ponyboy and Johnny were walking home. Johnny said that he would stay at Ponyboy’s house for a night. When they went home Darry got mad at Ponyboy that he came so late,so he hit him. Then they went to the park for
