Ralph Emerson said “A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is brave five minutes later.” In the book, The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, Johnny, Ponyboy, and Darry are all heros. Ponyboy and Johnny are best friends and Greasers. Darry is Ponyboy's older brother. Johnny and Ponyboy are heros because they saved five kid’s lives. To began with, Darry is a hero because he sacrificed his scholarship to college for his brothers. A hero is someone who will sacrifice for someone else, and is no ordinary person. It is important to recognize that all people have common life experiences, which affect how they act and what they do. Therefore, a hero is someone who shows courage and puts their life at stake to save others, and several characters who portrayed heroic qualities throughout the novel are Johnny Cade, Ponyboy Curtis, and Darry Curtis. As previously stated, a hero is defined as trustworthy and courageous, and Johnny definitely portrays these qualities. For example, Ponyboy states on page 92 “I caught one quick glance at his face; it was red- marked from falling embers and sweat- streaked, but he grinned at me. He wasn’t …show more content…
According to Darry on page 98, Darry exclaimed “Ponyboy, where have you been all this time? he meant “ Pony, you’ve scared me to death. Please be careful, because I couldn't stand if anything happened to you.” The example proves that because he cares a lot about Ponyboy. Darry doesn’t want want anything to happen to Ponyboy. The author supports this by stating on page 7, “Darry jammed his fist in his pockets. “They didn’t hurt you bad, did they?” This shows that Darry had an impact on Ponyboy because he cares a lot about him. Furthermore, if Ponyboy gets hurt Darry will be upset and will be heartbroken. This proves Darry has a kind and loving heart. To sum it up, a person who is heroic and risks his
