End of life care is a very touchy topic to address especially if the patient is not competent to make their own decision. This week, learned of some doctrines that are associated with end of life care such as informed consent, substituted judgement and advanced directives. Advance directives are legal documents that allows the patient to make decisions about end-of-life care ahead of time. It gives a forum for caregivers and family or friends to not be confused as to what the patient would prefer to do if the situation arises.
