(AGG) Not many people know much about PTSD, nor do they care, the author helps us explore the importance of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. (BS-1) The author uses many details in her novel Under the Persimmon Tree to get the point across that PTSD is a huge issue. (BS-2) The author also uses the characters in the novel to show the struggles and conflicts PTSD can cause. (BS-3) PTSD is a big issue that I wasn’t aware of until Staples opened my eyes to the realness of PTSD. (SIP-A) Najmah has suffered a great deal of conflicts in her life, and many of them are caused by PTSD. (STEWE-1) The author shows PTSD through Najmah, “For all of her kindness toward me, I have begun to resent Khalida. It isn’t only that she tries to make me stay in the tent and help with her work, or even that she disapproves of my acting like a boy. It’s more that she has her family, every one of them, safe around her. And I have no one” (Staples 150). The author shows PTSD through Najmah’s conflicts, Najmah refuses to open up to the love that others provide her. Due to PTSD, Najmah can't take in someone's love. The only people that she would let love her was her family. Her family is gone and she has nobody to love her, but when Kahlida starts to show affection toward her she won't accept it. The author shows how Najmah is frustrated and depressed that everyone around her is loved but herself. Staples uses the PTSD symptom of depression to get across how it may affect a person's life. (STEWE-2) The author also shows how Najmah suffers from PTSD through past events, “Najmah’s hands fly to her head as if she tries to protect if from blows” (Staples 195). Najmah is suffering from PTSD, she thinks she is going to be hit every time someone raises their hands above their head.
