Throughout history many Latin American countries have experienced varies aspect of economic depression. Because of the Economic depression, many of the less fortunate in Latin America have been deprived of basic necessities such as food, water, and medicine. It has been the same story for the indigenous people for several centuries. They have constantly been taken advantage of and faced with political corruption, inequality, and division of class. These unjust circumstances have led to the demise of the poor. According to Vakis, Rigolini, and Lucchetti (2015), “one out of four Latin Americans today remains poor. Many people in Latin America are “chronic poor”, which means they are born into poverty and never escape their poverty status. Unfortunately, the chronic poor have fallen into the cracks of the social assistance system and have been left behind”. Although there were moments where change seemed possible, things remained the same and the poor continued to unjustly suffer under the hands of the rich. The people’s fight for social equality was unsuccessful, and the cost of fighting for justice came with a price, which was the death of innocent people including Silvana.
Another example that demonstrates the underprivileged people in Latina America fighting for social equality is in the film El Violin. The character Don Plutarco an elderly man with a missing hand survives by playing the violin for a few pesos to buy food. Don Plutarco, his son, and grandson are not only musicians, but humble farmers whose land was confiscated by government officials.
