The story “The Lottery” is a proof that small town mentality has a lot of common with mob mentality and sometimes even cult where everyone follows one person or god and listen to the “experienced” ones. It can be shown with the effect of a small town on people, and the power that people have on other in a small village compare to big towns. The story shows that even the people who did not believe in this tradition, or people that had to sacrifice their own family like Mr. Hutchinson who had to show his wife's ticket, “...forced the slip of paper out of her hand” (106), still participated in the tradition. This story shows the influence of people in small town and the power of ignorance.
