During a time of extreme change was throughout the 1900 to the 1920’s, this time is remembered as the Progressive Era. The Progressive Era was a period of extensive social, political, and economical reforms across the United States. There was many new laws that would banish existing legislation, one of them being alcohol. There was protests, rebellions, and rallies by the citizens of America going against or pushing for a law that should be passed or banished. Throughout this time period, some of the new legislation that was passed after many years of fighting, changed America for the better. In my opinion, the most important success of the progressive era was the nineteenth amendment. The nineteenth amendment is very important to the constitution since it stated all people have to right to vote no matter their gender or race (Kids, 19th …show more content…
Even though there were major changes occurring, there was also amendments that were passed which turned out to be a failure. In my eyes, the eighteenth amendment ended up causing more damage than good. The eighteenth amendment prohibited, “ the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors” (US Constitution, Amendment XVIII). As soon as alcohol was outlawed, all of the americans wanted it more than before. Even though there was already alcohol issues before this new legislation, after it, there was an uproar. Many started to break the law by buying, selling, and drinking alcohol. Speakeasies started to become extremely well-known in populated cities such as New York City , Chicago, and Detroit. In New York City there was about one hundred thousand speakeasies alone, Chicago had more than seven thousand, and Detroit had over seventeen thousand (Speakeasies). If the government had not passed the 18th amendment, there would not have been so much illegal activity going on during this
