Until 19th century, the concept of broad animal welfare was completely alien to society as no thought had been given to the consequences of negatively impacting animal life. Even after the earliest animal cruelty laws were passed, the position of the average person was reactive instead of proactive in establishing positive impacts. Therefore, most steps forward have been accomplished rather recently as part of independent investigations by authors and journalists. However, despite the progress made, animal welfare is still not an even moderately significant issue for the average person who is told to put themselves first and let the chips fall where they may. This is the main issue that needs to be addressed in the daily, monthly, and yearly decisions one makes regarding animal welfare shifting from excessive self-interest to a considerate viewpoint. In my opinion, the concern for animal welfare is a subset of broader environmentalism, so daily habits that benefit the environment will in turn benefit animals. The obvious and somewhat overplayed changes remain relevant such as reducing one’s overall consumption to lessen the strain on critically threatened habitats. This stage is where visible activism is appropriate whether it is telling just your friends or random strangers on the sidewalk about animal welfare. In addition, every couple of years, elections occur, which is the perfect time to express your beliefs and have them potentially become policy. The activism element is critical since for certain parts of the animal welfare movement, changing the little things in one’s life is insufficient.
