Gun laws are necessary and permitting allows law-abiding citizens to establish home defense and personal safety. Guns, as with any weapon, are only dangerous in the hands of someone intending to do harm. For example, my neighbor prevented a home invasion and ended a series of assaults in our neighborhood just last year with her rifle. Citizens rarely ever use weaponry for anything other than hunting, target practice or a ‘feel safe at night’ mechanism. At any given time, I personally own twenty guns, give or take, and during my forty years on earth, have only raised my weapon to a human once, to deter an incident. Unfortunately, I was forced to fire, but my experience with the weapon ended the confrontation and kept all parties uninjured. We, as a people, need to …show more content…

Alabama, an open carry state, has some of the most lenient laws and still competently covers the basics, including violent felons, diagnosed mental illness and affirmed cases of regular drug or alcohol abuse. These factors represent a large percentage of the reasons firearms elicit fear, so yes this portion of the population should not be given a permit to carry a weapon. Mental Illness, for example, has been the accused for the many school shooting in recent years.

Imagine the retelling of those horrors, this time allowing and even encouraging permitted teachers, faculty, and administration to arm themselves. Already stories of teachers protecting students with their own lives is commonplace in school violence. These teachers might have been able to stop the perpetrator before the violence escalated, therefore being a perfect example of lawful, permitted security saving lives. Law enforcement simply can not provide continuous protection from the lawless, only the scrutinized among the population has the ability to accomplish this
